Wheel Tax Increase
Effective February 1, 2021, the Montgomery County Wheel Tax will increase to $74.00.
Non-Resident Military
Effective July 13, 2017, the non-resident military Wheel Tax exemption will be limited to one (1) per active duty member annually. An End of Month LES, dated within the last ninety (90) days, must be presented for exemption. To qualify for the exemption, the active duty member must be stationed at a Tennessee base (to include Fort Campbell).

You must be a current Montgomery County resident, an active duty soldier listing Tennessee on your LES for state taxes, or an active duty soldier providing current Orders to a Tennessee base (to include Fort Campbell). Your application will be processed within one - two business days of receipt. Please allow ten (10) days for postal delivery. Unfortunately, specialty class plates that require proof of membership or military credentials cannot be renewed online. To verify if your license plate requires documentation to be submitted, click here. If you have any questions, please contact our office at (931) 648-5711.
The processing fee is $2.00 plus 2.25% of the total cost. You will also pay the mail fee of $2.00. (Beginning January 3, 2022, a mail fee of $5.00 will apply if receiving new license plate metal.) Some e-mail filters and spam blockers can prevent you from receiving the confirmation e-mails generated by the web-server. To process your renewal online, you will need the following:
- Valid credit card (VISA, MasterCard, Discover or American Express)
- License plate number
- The license plate expiration date cannot be more than 90 days away.
*No refunds will be issued after application has been processed.
Disabled Veteran Wheel Tax Exemption
Per TCA 5-8-102, any disabled veteran who has one hundred percent (100%) permanent total disability is exempt from the motor vehicle privilege tax (wheel tax) upon submission of evidence of such disability. Proof of a 100% rating (i.e., signed VA letter) must be submitted at time of application. No refunds will be issued after application has been processed.
