Respectfully Retiring Our Nation’s Flags

Flag Retirement Collection Box

Our collection box is available year-round for your retired U.S. flags.

Proper Disposal of Worn and Non-Serviceable U.S. Flags

At the Montgomery County Veterans Service Office (MCVSO), we provide a respectful and proper means of retiring old, worn-out, or non-serviceable U.S. flags. If you have a flag that has served its time, we invite you to bring it to our collection point for proper disposal.

Our Collection Point

We have a large wooden collection box located near the entrance of our office. This collection point is available year-round. Simply bring your retired U.S. flag and place it in the box for respectful retirement.

Flag Retirement Ceremony

Each year, on Flag Day (June 14th), the MCVSO hosts a Flag Retirement Ceremony. During this event, we adhere to the guidelines of the U.S. Flag Code, conducting a respectful and solemn burning of the collected flags. This ceremony serves as a tribute to the flag and what it represents, offering a dignified end to its service.

How You Can Participate

  • Drop off your worn or non-serviceable U.S. flags: Anytime during our regular business hours.
  • Attend our Flag Retirement Ceremony: Join us on Flag Day to witness and participate in this respectful tradition.
