At the Montgomery County Veterans Service Office (MCVSO), our mission is to connect veterans with the best resources available. We are proud to refer veterans to the National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP) for assistance with discharge upgrades through their Lawyers Serving Warriors® (LSW) program.
About Discharge Upgrades
Veterans who were discharged with a less than fully Honorable characterization of service may be eligible for an upgrade, which can significantly improve access to benefits, employment prospects, and overall reputation. Common reasons for discharge upgrades include mental health conditions, military sexual trauma (MST), traumatic brain injuries (TBI), wrongful personality or adjustment disorder diagnoses, outdated policies such as Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT), and cases of racial discrimination. NVLSP reviews each applicant’s records, including military personnel, medical, and other relevant documents, to determine eligibility and provide tailored legal guidance. Their team works closely with veterans to build strong cases based on these and other factors, helping them achieve discharge upgrades.
