Notes on Artists in the Collection by Jacqueline and Ned Crouch
Peter Max
(1937- )
One of the most famous
living artists, Peter Max is also a pop culture icon. Known for his bright,
bold colors he captured the American scene in the late 60s and early 70s. He
continues to create powerful, social pieces.
The title of the color serigraph in the collection is George
Washington and is dated 1970.
Raphael Soyer
(1899-1987)
During the 1930s, Soyer showed regularly in the large annual and
biennial American exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Carnegie
Institute and the Art Institute of Chicago. His work is in numerous museums
such as Museum of Modern Art, The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.,
The Phillips Collection in Washington D.C., Tel Aviv Museum in Israel, Uffizi
Gallery in Florence Italy, and the Los Angeles County Museum in California.
The black and white lithograph, circa 1960, is titled Young
Girl.
Kathe Kollwitz (1867-1945)
A very popular artist of her time, her work resounded with compassion on behalf
of the working poor, the suffering and the sick. Her work is exhibited in
numerous museums as well as having two museums dedicated solely to her work,
one in Berlin and the other in Cologne.
Self-Portrait is
a limited edition re-strike from her original etching.
Maud
Earl (1864 - 1943)
Earl was a painter of animals in London and Paris at the end of the 19th and the
beginning of the 20th century. She exhibited at the Royal Academy of London and the
Salon of Paris, as well
as various expositions in Britain and America. Earl painted the favorite dogs of Queen Victoria and
King Edward VII.
Earl also
produced several etchings of various breeds of dogs. The one in this collection is titled A Position of Trust (Woodcote,
Janet (Bull Terrier) Mr. Pegg, owner).
Karel Appel
(1921-2006)
Appel was
a Dutch painter, sculptor, and poet. Appel has an international reputation and is in the
following collections: Tate
Gallery, London, England; Museum of Modern Art, New York, N.Y; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and the
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Mass.
Appel's work
was colorful and had a childlike simplicity. The color lithograph in the
collection is titled Bear and was produced in 1973.
Albion Harris Bicknell
(1837-1915)
Bicknell
studied in Boston and at Ecole
des Beaux-Arts, Thomas Couture in Paris. He is known for his portraits and historical scenes.
There are two
of Bicknell's etchings in the collection: On the Androscoggin ( 1887) and A Bit of Venice (1887).
Paul Drury
(1903-1987)
English-born
Drury, whose specialties were
painting and engraving, studied at the Royal Academy. Drury was a professor at Goldsmith College
School of Art and served as President of the Royal Society of Painters-Etchers. His work is
included in the following collections: The British Museum, The Contemporary Art
Society, and the Royal
Academy.
Drury made
ninety-two prints of which half are portraits. The one in this collection is titled Bust
Of A Man and dated 1926.
Laszlo Bodo
(1958- )
Bodo studied
at Memphis State University and was the son of Sandor and Ilona Bodo. The Bodos escaped the Hungarian police through a back window
with a box of brushes and the clothes on their backs and settled in Nashville,
TN. They became important
members of the Nashville Artist Guild and art scene. Laszlo Bodo is currently the photographer
for the Winterthur Museum.
There
are two 3-dimensional color photographs in the collection titled Street
Preacher, Tilman Ghandi (1985) and Shoes (1984).
Roger
Evans (1940- )
Evans
received his master's degree from the Cranbrook Academy of Art and taught for a couple of years
at Austin Peay State
University before moving to Canada. Evans was primarily an abstract expressionist painter and
also made bold, abstract color serigraphs.
There
are two of Evans serigraphs in this collection: To Marney with Love (1968-69) is a
color serigraph and Line-Up (1966-67) is black and white.
As students of
Evans, Ned and I got to know Roger and his wife and their beloved Irish wolfhound, Marney.
Sadly, Marney was rushed to the vets and did not survive. This print was his homage to
Marney.
Ann Katzen
(b. circa 1950-)
Sadly, all we know is that Katzen studied photography at Cranbrook Academy of Art.
The black
& white photograph is titled Italian Scene and was produced in 1975.
