Personnel and Selection Process

Greetings,

Thank you for your interest in employment with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. Please read the information below regarding our application process. 

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for the protection of the lives and property within the boundaries of the county. We enforce all federal and state laws, and carry out the duties enumerated in the state constitution. We are a Full Service Law Enforcement Agency.

We serve and protect citizens on a 24 hour basis. All personnel accept the fact that the Sheriff’s Office functions around the clock. Applicants must be agreeable to shift work, irregular hours, rotating days off, and special assignments involving compensatory or overtime. All assignments of personnel are solely at the discretion of the Sheriff, or designee. To accomplish this, we employ both sworn and non-sworn personnel.

Additional Information on these roles will be provided when an application has been accepted by a recruiter.

Documentation

As we move forward in the pre-hire cycle, our agency requires multiple documents to process you as a candidate. The following documents must be attached to the application or provided to the Background Investigator:

  • Formal Application and Notarized Release
  • Copy of valid Driver’s License
  • Copy of Social Security Card
  • Copy of Birth Certificate
  • DD-214 if any military service (Honorable Discharge)
  • Copy of high school transcript(s) or Diploma, or GED Certificate
  • Copy of POST Certification (if applicable)
  • Copy of Corrections Certifications (if applicable)
  • Copy of Marriage Certificate
  • Copy of Divorce Decree Settlement

After the initial submission of your application, you will be contacted by one of our Background Investigators to schedule a time to meet with a member of our team to complete your application and investigative interview. This will be located at 120 Commerce Street, Clarksville TN 37040. (Parking during business hours may require payment) 

We will have a notary present when you arrive and you can review and sign your application at this time. During this interview, the Background Investigator will go over your application with you and explain the process moving forward.

At this point, a time will be set for you to complete the IO Solutions I2 test. Passing this pre-employment test is required to move forward in the process.

 

Other Considerations

Applicants shall pass the PT Test to be eligible for a Tennessee POST-certified position, which requires attending a Police Academy. This test is not required for Detention Deputy or civilian positions. Testing Requirements are below.

New hire employees who lack any level of experience are placed at a Recruit Level 80 pay grade.

New Hire members who have direct experience, i.e. POST-certified from within this judicial district shall be assessed at a 1:1 ratio not to exceed step 3, with the first step calculated being the Recruit pay grade.

New Hire members who have direct Tennessee Corrections experience, i.e. TCI certification, shall be assessed at a 1:1 ratio not to exceed step 3, with the first step calculated being the Recruit pay grade.

 The model used for placement shall be:

  • 3-5 years of verified relevant experience, one step shall apply
  • 5-10 years of verified relevant experience, two steps shall apply
  • 10-15 years of verified relevant experience, three steps shall apply

Movement from Recruit pay grade 80 to Deputy Sheriff pay grade 85 shall be made upon the merit of the performance. The merit of performance is attained by successfully attaining the following:

  • Completion of all required training associated with the assigned position.

Starting Pay

  1. Sworn positions work an 8.6 hour days/43-hour workweek
  2. Civilian positions work 8-hour days/40-workweek.

Interview

Candidates recommended from the initial background and (I2) test will move to the Lieutenants interview board. This is the first of two formal boards. 

This is a professional organization; dress for success. 

Candidates recommended by the Lieutenants board will move to the Executive Board; those recommended at the Executive Board will receive a Conditional Job Offer.

 

If you are offered a job

Those who receive Job offers will still be required to pass a drug screen (Commissioned Personnel Only), agility test, TB skin test, police psychological, and a medical physical; other testing may be required as determined for the position. 

 

Social Media

The integrity of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office must be above reproach. All candidates shall avoid any conduct, which would compromise their integrity or undermine public confidence if they were to be selected for employment. This relates to personal websites, social media, social networking sites, or other electronically disseminated material or communication. 

 

This includes content that is illegal, racist, unbecoming, or unprofessional. Such content includes behavior that depicts the applicant in a negative way and is reasonably interpreted as having an adverse impact on the future efficiency, harmony, morale, or operation of this Office; or the safety of its employees. 

 

Applicants are reminded that investigators may use external sources, including the internet, to evaluate an applicant’s credibility. All background searches shall comply with applicable state and federal laws including the Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), 15 USC Section 1681. 

 

Disqualification

Applicants will not be considered for employment if they are:

  • Under investigation by law enforcement for a violation of state or federal law
  • On administrative leave pending potential disciplinary action
  • Under indictment
  • On bond for a state or federal violation of law
  • On suspension from their current employer
  • Terminated for use or excessive use of force
