The Montgomery County Archives is open for researchers Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Archives is closed the second Monday of every month for staff development, as well as all other holidays observed by Montgomery County Government. You can find a list of those holidays here.

Although it is not required, we do recommend that you make an appointment before your visit if you have specific records you would like to see or if you will need a staff member to assist you. To make an appointment, complete the Archives Request Form and select either “Book appointment to view archival materials” or “Book appointment with a staff member to assist with research” from the Request Type drop-down menu.

Facility Guidelines

All visitors to the Archives will be asked to sign in when they arrive. If it’s your first visit, you will also need to complete the Researcher Registration Form. All materials in the Archives are non-circulating and cannot be checked out. Archives staff will be available to provide information about our holdings and retrieve requested collection materials as you need them. If you have an appointment, let a staff member know when you arrive and they can provide you with any research materials requested in advance. In order to protect our collections, we ask that all researchers adhere by the following rules when visiting:

  • Food and drink, including chewing gum, are not allowed in the Archives.
  • Pencils are the only writing utensils permitted in order to prevent damage to the materials.
  • Researchers are permitted to bring laptops and notebooks into the Reading Room where they can work with archival materials.
  • All other belongings, including coats and bags, must be placed in the provided lockers.
  • We do allow photographs of our collections, but ask that you refrain from using a flash.
