The Archives is happy to conduct basic look-ups and research for free. Due to the many requests that we receive, we are not able to assist with in-depth research. If you request copies or scans of documents, there is a 15-cent charge per page after the first 5 pages. Fees for postage vary and will be determined once the research is complete. You will be advised of the exact cost before being asked to send any money.

Please keep your request focused on a specific person, event, or location that is directly related to Montgomery County. Tell us exactly what you are looking for, including any and all known details that will help us locate the requested materials. When possible, please provide the exact reference (Montgomery County office that created the record, book and page references, etc.)

Although we have other records, the specific record groups available for research by mail are the following:

  • Marriages, indexed by groom and bride, beginning in 1838
  • Deeds, beginning in 1789
  • Probates, beginning in 1796
  • County Court Minutes, 1804-1819, every name index; from 1820, general surname
  • Chancery Court Minutes, beginning 1840, general surname
  • Delayed Birth Records, incomplete, recorded 1940s
  • Gannaway Obituary Abstracts, 1810, indexed by decedent
  • Montgomery County census, 1820-1880; for 1900-1930, district must be indicated

To submit a research request complete the Archives Request Form and under “Request Type” select the option “General research on a topic, person, or location.” Please submit only one request at a time.
