About Our Programs


Nature Camp

Come join us this summer and learn about the worlds of plants, rocks, animals, insects, and fish! Nature Camp begins June 6th. 

 

Details

  • For age groups 8-11 and 12-14
  • Monday through Friday, 8:30am-Noon
  • $25 registration fee includes activity materials, snacks and t-shirt
  • Be sure to bring a water bottle, sunscreen, and bug spray daily!

Openings Available

  • June 21th- June 24th - 8:30am-Noon - Ages 8-11
  • June 27th-July 1st - 1:30pm-5:00pm - Ages 8-11

Nature Festival

Celebrate summer pollinators like hummingbirds and bumblebees at our Nature Festival on August 20th from 8am to 1pm! 

 

Schedule


 

  • 8 am to 11:30 am – Hummingbird Banding Demonstration in the ‘backyard’ of Nature Center by Southeastern Avian Research.
  • 8 am to 1 pm – Children’s Scavenger hunt and hummingbird activity under the Tents in the field.
  • 8 am to 1 pm – Children’s Arts and Craft activities at the pavilion at back of parking lot.
  • 8 am to 1 pm – Master Gardeners will be on hand to discuss native plants for pollinators.
  • 9:30 am – Kid Friendly Hike – Meet near the ‘meadow’ under the TVA Tower. We will take a short nature walk on a gravel trail. Learn how to prepare for exploring the park and how to discover nature around you.
  • 10 am – Hal Hassall will talk ‘BEES’ in the Nature Center classroom
  • 12 noon – “Hummingbirds” Learn all about these flying jewels from Master Hummingbird Bander, Cyndi Routledge.

Bird Watching 101

Join us to learn the basics of bird watching April 30th and May 28th, 10:15am to 11:15. We have binoculars for checkout or you can bring your own. Afterwards, wander the park and trails, or relax on our viewing deck. Suitable for 8+. No prior experience required, program is free to all!

We Grow Wednesdays

We Grow Wednesdays are self-guided activities for adults and their children. Each activity focuses on a special Nature topic and developing skill for your little ones. Join us anytime between 10am and 4pm, every Wednesday. All materials are provided, no registration or fee required. 

 

May Schedule

  • 5/4, Nature Journals
  • 5/11, Wood Magnets
  • 5/18, Camouflage Hunt
  • 5/25, Water Testing

You will receive a kit containing instructions, materials and supplies to take anywhere in the park to complete. Also, our community room will be set up for the activity indoors, available rain or shine! Simply turn in the supplies when finished, you can take home your project!

Guided Hikes with Hailey J. Radnor

This series of guided hikes will be led by our programming specialist, Hailey J. Raynor. Hailey is a Certified Interpretive Guide through the National Association of Interpretation. Each of the hikes below are designed to give you access to the trail system while learning firsthand about a variety of topics. The trail difficulty level is rated by easy, moderate or challenging, please use your best judgment when making a selection. Hikes will begin at 9:30 am sharp and last 45 min to 1 hour. Children 10 and older are welcome with an adult supervisor. Please dress appropriately for the weather conditions.

Artist Reception

Come celebrate the beautiful artwork on display in the Hand Family Community Room created by Lynne Waters Griffey! The exhibit will be open June 4th from 2pm-4pm. Refreshments will be served, open to all.

Reading Round-Up

Reading Round-Up is a little learner literacy Sponsored by The Blue Star Families of Tennessee to help build home libraries. Join us on the first Friday of every month from 10:15am to 11am as we host a reading circle in our community room. After the reading, everyone is invited to pick out a new, free book to take home! Snacks Provided. This program is free and open to the public.
