Governor's Volunteer Stars Award Winners Announced

Congratulations go to H. Lynn Hunter and Trinity Beard for being selected the Montgomery County recipients for the 2011 Governor’s Volunteer Stars Awards.

Hunter, the Montgomery County Adult winner, serves our community through numerous local organizations. He has served on the Salvation Army Board for 15 years and served for many years as the chairman of the bell ringing campaign. He was an integral part of the capital campaign that raised funds to build the shelter and chapel for the local Salvation Army. He is an advocate for the young and old alike. He assists with the children’s Christmas party sponsored by the Downtown Kiwanis Club each year. This year over 275 children were given a Christmas to remember at the event. Mr. Hunter also serves the Veterans of the community by coordinating the annual “Interview a Veteran” essay contest and recruiting veterans for the newly published Faces of Valor, Volume 2 book. Mr Hunter is a caring member of the Montgomery County community and continues to find ways to give back.

Beard, the Montgomery County Youth honoree, isn’t your typical teen; she is one that is more concerned with others that she is herself. She is actively involved in assisting Radical Mission Compassionate Ministries. She recently helped organize a food drive that collected over 2,500 pounds of food for the organization. She also worked with the Warm Souls Christmas Dinner through Radical Missions by cooking, decorating and helping organize the clothing and toy closets for the event. This event assisted many needy individuals in the Montgomery County community with warm clothing and a hot meal during the holidays. She is a great asset to Montgomery County and to all of the organizations that she assists.

Hunter and Beard will be recognized, along with other recipients from across the state, at a reception in Nashville on February 27 and both will be honored tonight during the February County commission meeting with proclamations from County Mayor Carolyn Bowers.

Volunteer Tennessee coordinates the Governor’s Volunteer Stars Awards at the state level. Volunteer Tennessee is the 25 member bipartisan citizen board appointed by the Governor to oversee AmeriCorps and service-learning programs and to advance volunteerism and citizen service to solve community problems in the Volunteer State.
