Sustainability Practices and Programs

The following practices are those that have been used most commonly by organizations in the CMC Green Certification Program to save resources. They range from no cost, habit changes to low and moderate costs.

    Energy Conservation Initiatives

  • Turn out lights in empty rooms
  • Adjust thermostats when the business is closed
  • Eliminate personal space heaters, individual sized appliances and devices
  • Have a central copier/printer and eliminate individual printers
  • Power down equipment when business is closed
  • Turn off lighted signage during daylight hours
  • Stay clear of energy vampires
  • De-lamp - Look for areas that are over lit and remove lighting
  • Use blinds or curtains for temperature control
  • Check your water heater temperature setting
  • Use fans for cooling
  • Consider tinting windows
  • Seal air leaks
  • Install occupancy sensors

    Energy Efficiency Initiatives

  • Request an energy audit
  • Update lighting
  • Stagger the lighting, HVAC temps and machinery in large areas
  • Install programmable thermostats
  • Replace filters and clean HVAC coils regularly
  • Replace appliances and equipment with energy saving equipment

    Pollution Prevention

  • Consolidate trips
  • Carpool
  • Incorporate a no idling policy
  • Use biodegradable cleaning products
  • Add plants inside or around your facility
  • Choose native plants that require little watering
  • Mow only early in the morning or in the evening
  • Consolidate material shipments
  • Reducing packaging with orders

    Stormwater Management

  • “Police” the area around your business to keep trash out of stormwater drains
  • Plant buffers in to minimize water going to the drain

    Waste Minimization

  • Ditch the bottles
  • Eliminate the Styrofoam
  • Eliminate or cut down on the trash
  • Consider electronic receipts
  • Pay bills online
  • Consider what can be reused in some way
  • Recycle everything that can be recycled
  • Use email rather than snail mail
  • Don’t print for your business or for your customers unless it’s necessary, costs go beyond the paper

    Water Conservation

  • Don’t run water unnecessarily
  • Water early morning or in the evening, stay away from the heat of the day
  • Consider low-flush options on toilettes
  • Add aerators to kitchen and bathroom sinks
